About WASS

The History

The West Africa Secondary School as it is known today, was founded in 1946 by Rev. J. C. Tettey and Emmanuel Addo as the West Africa College of Commerce in Tudu (Accra Central). It remained a private institution until 1954 when it was absorbed into the public system as a boys-only Government-Assisted school.

In 1971, the school was moved to Accra New town while preparations were being made for a permanent campus at Adentan, its current location.

The move to Adentan eventually happened in 1987 under the headship of Mr. Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah. WASS became a mixed school in the 1989 academic year with the introduction of the SHS system in Ghana.

WASS became a dominant force in sports, where it dominated in athletics on the regional scene in Greater Accra; the school went unchallenged as champions for a decade between 1975 and 1985, a feat that saw the school contributing the bulk to Ghana’s national athletics team over a period with the likes of Timothy Hesse and others.
